Visit Your Local Parks

Updated: Oct 12, 2023

A great way to get exercise is to hike/walk in your local parks. This is one of our favorite things to do. My husband and I try to meet in the park everyday after work to share what went on during the day. It's a great way to sneak exercise in! When you are talking and walking you are getting your steps in without even thinking about it!

Here are a couple ideas to motivate you and make it fun!

  1. Pick a park and do every trail in it. Find a park near you and make a goal to hit every trail there. Some you will be able to do in a day and some you will have to make several trips. This is a great way to get exercise and explore new areas. Tip: take a photo on your phone of the trail map to keep track of where you have gone.

  2. Pick an area and visit every park in that area. One year we hit every park in Lake County. It was fun to see all the different parks that were around us that we had never been to. Tip: Make a check list or if you have kids you can get creative and do a park passport for every park you visit.

  3. Check out the different activities that the parks near you offer. Sometimes the guided tours can take you to places that you couldn’t normally go. You can find out all the programs on the park websites. This is also a great way to meet others who are interested in the same activities you enjoy!

  4. If you have kids create a scavenger hunt to keep them interested in walking the trails. This was my favorite thing to do as a kid. It also taught me a lot about nature without even knowing it!

To fit exercise in with a busy schedule...Return phone calls while walking in the park, listen to a podcast/book on tape or meet with a business partner to walk and talk instead of meeting for coffee!
